Perise Forbi
Cameroon, Africa

The first #WVPcommunity leader we are grateful to have connected with, has seen the plastic bottle pollution fill the rivers for years, and is doing something about it!

These motivated world citizens, Forbi alongside a group of peers, have collected thousands of pounds of plastic from river beds and the environment otherwise bound for the nearby ocean.

The nearest recycling collection centers will not make the drive to collect, leaving Forbi and his support team to upcycle and use the plastic bottles anyway they can to eliminate it from entering the environment as waste.

About the WVPmover

Forbi Perise Eyong Nyosai

23 years old

I am the third born in my family and I have 4 siblings. I come from a very humble background with my family engaged in subsistence agriculture. I am currently studying environmental science and occupational health and safety at the University of Buea Cameroon where I hope to obtain a bachelor of science degree. My passion is for the environment and ocean, and It’s been challenging to mix my community volunteerism and school work. Sometimes time management is a problem to me and setting my priorities right. I don’t work or have any form of income so sponsoring my campaigns and community work is difficult considering the limited resources available. Due to my consistency in doing cleanups , together with some youths in the community, we had over 7000 plastic bottles with no recycling company around. The closest is over 2hours drive away. So I have had those plastic bottles in my keeping for a long time.

About the project

Walking on the streets of my town and other cities in my country, I realized that plastic bags and bottles were littered all around with the majority found in drainage and local waterways. This pushed me to do some research on the internet on the impact of plastics on the environment. Information about the devastating effects of plastics on marine organisms and land motivated me to take personal initiatives to start picking up plastic litter.

Making my environmental cleaner by using education to change habits in my community and engaging young people as agents of change and sustainable innovation. Researching ways to recycle and upcycle plastic that will be useful in my community
I have organized and initiated over 50 cleanup campaigns and have participated in over in a dozen other. Over 12,000 plastic bottles were collected in the cleanups that I have personally organized and I have been part of others with over 20,000 collected. Over 100 kids and young adults participated in a recycling contest I organized and I have recruited 15 college students into this cause. An overall 4000 persons have participated in our plastic bottle collection campaigns
I have been picking up plastic litter for 3 years now that since 2016 but my love for the environment started while I started enjoying been outdoors to enjoy nature.

I have worked with over 1000 youths in my community in different cleanup campaigns

I use trash bags, gloves, nets for storage, printable materials for school and community outreach. And sometimes we hire tricycles or vans to transport plastics over short distances. Social media has also been a tool to raise awareness of the wider population.

How can we help you do MORE?

With unlimited support I could engage youths to act as plastic-free ambassadors in my community, thousands of plastic bottles laying in rivers across my country and build Eco housing out of plastic waste for local communities. I also hope to recycle plastics into paving blocks.
I hope to intensify my outreach to schools to educate and raise awareness. Start a plastic bottle collection point and store in a storage facility preventing into from getting to the landfill or ocean. The plastics will then be sorted, shredded using a shredder and then mixed up with sand under high temperatures to produce paving blocks
Storage facility and cages for plastic waste collection to facilitate cleanups. A shredder and tricycle. Getting this equipments require funds and some technical expertise.
